Does Size Really Matter In Our Digital Age?

Well, we have all seen the ad, but that& 39;s not what I want to talk about, so get out of your head immediately. No, we will think about what many call " Queen of Arts " - ie painting.

Have you ever wandered around a huge Art Gallery and marvelled at the works of Tintoretto, Rafael, or master painter Constable , which has produced enormous canvasses? Again, we have many fine examples of beautiful artwork in cameos and miniatures. Indeed, in all sizes between these extremes of proof of creative genius can be found through ages.

However down, it is clear that the correlation between size and creative genius is poor. Mera size on the premise " never mind the quality feel the width " is not the main element of a masterpiece. Yes, we are fascinated by the Sistine Chapel, for example, the size of the paintings, but he is the genius of the painter who draws the attention. It is also true that although the artist tugs at our heartstrings by the richness of detail that works in a large format permits.

In in the same way, in large and medium format cameras have traditionally been the tools of professional photographers work for many, many Years. In a previous article, I suggested that there would always be room for cinema, especially for users of major formats.

Now, get to the point, because in digital parlance, the wealth of detail evident in the large formats is Expressed as the file size. Unlike physical dimensions, which can not be changed once the work has been committed to recording medium, whether film or canvas size, the digital file is not as clear restricted.

Of when size of the original image is changed over, say, the image compression, there is usually a loss in quality Jpeg eg Even the use of a lossless transformation not add anything to the image, which only preserves what is there.

However there is a revolutionary item of the image manipulation software that is entirely & ; quot; " change the image, which comes as a Photoshop plug - As with Photoshop 6.0 or higher and is called " Genuine Fractals ", and here is what the authors say,

& ; quot; It is an indispensable tool for photographers, graphic artists and digital imaging professionals, Genuine Fractals lets you create resolution - Independent images of any size file and allows you to print superior quality enlargements without any degradation in image quality & ; quot;

By save your digital image with this package as a small stn file, you can create files without loss of up to 70Mb and beyond. After saving and re-open this file in Photoshop, Genuine Fractals kicks in and you can easily produce files of a particular size

I was stunned by this software and began to wonder what the impact could be both for digital photographers and medium / large format professionals. Of course, as already mentioned, this increased size NOT put additional information to the shot. Once again, and also not make a dupe 67 of 35 mm slide improve image quality and many still photographers that when submitting the libraries.

Digital photographers can get even more benefits by strengthening the file size using Genuine Fractals, before print out enlargements. This can be very useful for Wedding Photographers who want the convenience of using a digital camera, but is unhappy with the quality of enlargements often requested. Using Genuine Fractals can save time and money effort by eliminating the need for a backup camera.

On film on the other hand, it may be that Genuine Fractals can produce the best results with photos captured in the movie and then scanned, because the noise in the image not original is removed when extended, in fact, will be more evident. This means that a mid-range digital camera shots are likely to fare worse movie on widening that caught fire with 10 million pixels +

With a new version Genuine Fractals only 3.5 released, it could be useful and may be a test also a valuable tool. So if you want to explore this a little more, get a copy of the Amateur Photographer for 23 October 2004 and read your review of this exciting software.

Why bother medium format camera with a 35 mm is caressed by this software will do instead? Oh I know I will start from lectures to purists even suggest something as daft as superior optical lenses and better, but for some people that can only be total. If this article, opened the possibility of a better method of freelance work for some, this is all that matters.

So not want to run around telling your mates that size does not matter and that I have given medium format cameras to the Trash history. No, I just shine the spotlight on the funny old currency digital / film and give it a flick in the air. Who knows how it will land? At least I have a 50-50 chance of being right!
