As with any field, there are good technical training schools, and bad ones. When you sign up with one of these schools, you ve made a significant investment in time and money. You deserve to know everything about the school and your job prospects after leaving that school before you put down your hard-earned money. The problem is, sometimes it s hard to know the right questions to ask.

The point of this article is not to bash technical training schools. That s how I got my start in IT eight years ago, and today I m a CCIE and own my own Cisco training company and my own consulting firm.

Before I ever put down the first dime, though, I asked some tough questions. So should you.

What are my true job prospects and legitimate salary levels after I graduate from your school?

We ve all heard the ads on the radio Did you know the average salary of an MCSE is $80,000? Are you worth $65,000 a year? If not, call us!

I m an optimist, and I often tell people that no field rewards individual achievement and drive like IT does. Having said that, none of us start at the top, and darn few of us start at that kind of salary.

I m sure that there are some people who broke in at $80,000, but I haven t met very many of them. Be very wary of technical schools that use the famous/infamous MCSE Salary Survey as a marketing tool. They tend to represent those salaries as starting salaries.

Ask your technical school what the average starting salary of their graduates is. And keep in mind that salary is not the most important factor to consider when looking for your first job in IT; it s the experience you ll be able to put on your resume later on that you should weigh heavily at this point.

In short, be very careful about schools that brag about starting salaries. It s not where you start, it s where you end up.

How up-to-date are the courses you re offering?

Make sure the school you re going to attend has made efforts to keep their courses relevant. Ask what changes have been made to their curriculum in the last three years. No field changes faster than IT. If the answer to that question is none , look somewhere else.

I want to work in IT security. Have you placed anyone in this field lately? If so, can I talk to them?

Technical schools are jumping on the security bandwagon, with a couple of schools running ads about training you to work in Homeland Security. If that s your goal, that s great, but keep in mind that you have to get a security clearance for any job like that.

And how do you get a security clearance? You have to be sponsored.

And who will sponsor you? Your employer.

Can you get employed in a Homeland Security job without having the clearance in the first place?

Hmmm. Probably not.

Hello, Catch-22.

Again, I m certainly not saying you can t eventually get an IT security job; if that s where you want to go, you can eventually get there. The key word there is eventually . Ask the school you re thinking of attending whether they ve actually been able to place graduates in such jobs. Ask to talk to them. If the school s managed to do so, they ll be glad to put you in touch with such graduates.

What textbooks does your school use?

Some technical school chains use only books that someone in their organization wrote. I ve heard some of their own teachers complain about the quality of these books. The technical school I attended used off-the-shelf books, and the quality was very good.

If you re looking into entering the IT field, you probably know someone who s already in it. Use that resource for everything it s worth. Ask that person what they think about the books, or for that matter, what the local reputation of the school is. IT is a small world, if the school has a good or bad reputation, most of the IT personnel in your city or town probably know about it.

The fifth question is a question to ask of HR representatives. Every technical school lists companies where they ve placed their graduates on their promotional material. Pick up the phone, call these companies, and ask to speak to someone in HR. Ask that person about the reputation of the school. Five to eight phone calls will give you a good picture of where the school stands with local employers.

Making the decision to attend a technical school can be the best decision you ve ever made; it certainly was for me. Make sure to ask the right questions before writing a check or taking a loan to attend; the answers to those questions will indicate to you whether this school is truly the school that can help you achieve your dreams.

This isn t just another reason to learn binary math (although it s a good one!), but summarizing routes is a true real-world skill that can help your network operate more efficiently. So the question isn t just how to summarize routes, it s why.
When you summarize routes in RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, or OSPF, you re replacing a series of routes with a summary route and mask. With RIP, IGRP, and EIGRP, this actually lessens the size of the routing update packet itself - multiple routes are replaced with the summary route. For instance, the routes 8.0.0.0/8, 9.0.0.0/8, 10.0.0.0/8, and 11.0.0.0/8 can be summarized as 8.0.0.0 252.0.0.0. Only the summary address will be found in the update packet, making it concise yet complete.
Summarizing routes can also make the routing table smaller, yet still allow for complete IP connectivity when done correctly. Using the above example, the four more-specific routes will be replaced by a single summary route. Since the entire routing table is parsed before the routing process is complete, keeping the routing table as small as possible does help speed the routing process as a whole.

Do your homework on your computer s worth. Just like you would for a car, check around at other classifieds and auction sites to see what other people are selling your make and model for.
Be sure you want to truly get rid of old faithful. You may be able to repair your old laptop rather than buy a new $2,000 Centrino model. Or you may be able to add RAM memory and a new hard drive to your four-year-old desktop rather than invest in a new $3,000 multimedia masterpiece. In other words, do a thorough cost-analysis of what it would take to rebuild your old computer, versus what it would cost to sell it and buy a new one. And check your heart too. You might be surprised just how attached you are to your old faithful.
Once you go through these steps, you are prepared to make your move and sell, sell, sell. And then, of course, you ll be ready to start on a whole new list of steps for buying a new computer. But that s a topic for another article!

World s First Cash Machine Launched 40 Years Ago - At Barclays Bank In Enfield

Forty years ago Reg Varney (of UK TV s On the Buses fame) changed the face of banking by becoming the world s first cash machine customer at Barclays Enfield branch in North London. On Wednesday 27th June 2007, the cash machine, ATM, or more colloquial Hole in the Wall celebrates its 40th birthday. The original machines, described as mini-banks or cash dispensers, were designed to allow customers access to cash 24 hours a day, outside of the restrictive opening times of banks during the 1960s. The cash machine was created to dispense 10 against a special paper voucher which the customer inserted into the machine followed by a unique 4 digit personal code in much the same way as today. By the end of the 1960s there were 781 cash machines across the world (595 in the UK) by the end of 2006 there were 1.64 million worldwide (60,642 in the UK).* The machine was invented by John Shepherd Barron, a managing director of De La Rue, whilst relaxing in his bath one day. He presented the idea to Harold Darvill, Chief General Manager of Barclays, who committed Barclays to buying the machines immediately. The machines were developed jointly by De La Rue and Barclays and swiftly moved from conception to installation within 24 months in order to beat the competition. At the time of the launch in 1967, Celtic had just made history by becoming the first British club to lift the European Cup and the sixties were in full swing with Procul Harum at Number 1 with A Whiter Shade of Pale. Colour TV is broadcast for the first time on BBC2 and Elvis has just married Priscilla Beaulieu. When Barclays took the decision to launch the Barclaycash machine that same year, cash was the most popular form of payment and the idea of withdrawing money through the wall was completely alien to the man on the street. John Shepherd Barron, the inventor of the ATM, said: I am delighted that the cash machine is still going strong. I remember back in 1965 that I would always take money out of my bank on a Saturday morning. However, one Saturday I was one minute late at my bank and it was closed. I had to ask my local garage to cash my cheque. That night I started thinking that there must be a better way to get cash when I wanted it. I thought of the chocolate vending machine where money was put in a lot and a bar dispatched surely money could be dispensed in the same way. Within two years my idea had become reality and we opened the first cash machine at Barclays Enfield. John Warren, head of ATMs for Barclays Bank, said: The hole in the wall or cash machine, more than any other banking innovation, has had a major impact on the way we all conduct our lives, not just our banking. Forty years ago cash was only available from 9-3 pm Monday to Friday and Saturdays from 9 -12.30 pm, and as cash was king queues outside branches on a Saturday morning to get weekend money were common. Well, we have all seen the ad, but that& 39;s not what I want to talk about, so get out of your head immediately. No, we will think about what many call " Queen of Arts " - ie painting.

Have you ever wandered around a huge Art Gallery and marvelled at the works of Tintoretto, Rafael, or master painter Constable , which has produced enormous canvasses? Again, we have many fine examples of beautiful artwork in cameos and miniatures. Indeed, in all sizes between these extremes of proof of creative genius can be found through ages.

I was stunned by this software and began to wonder what the impact could be both for digital photographers and medium / large format professionals. Of course, as already mentioned, this increased size NOT put additional information to the shot. Oh I know I will start from lectures to purists even suggest something as daft as superior optical lenses and better, but for some people that can only be total. Make Documenting Your Software Easier Than Ever Before

Here at M6.Net we ve just released our new control panel software, allowing for easier and better control over our clients website accounts. It was my task to write the documentation for this new software. After working through it in a traditional word processor application and subsequently producing a final product that was of little use, we came to realize that there needed to be a better way to write a manual, and to release it in multiple formats. One of the lead developers sent a link my way and after trying the evaluation copy of the software I realized that it was the package that we needed. Help and Manual 4 turns manual writing and distribution into a very simple affair.
The Help and Manual (hereafter known as H&M) homepage (www.helpandmanual.com) states that Help & Manual makes producing help a pleasure and this is a fairly accurate little catchphrase. When I first tried the evaluation version or edition 3 a while ago, it frustrated me that I had to copy and paste every page of the manual from the word processor into H&M. This was a daunting task even for our modest sized manual that runs just over 50 pages. With the newer version however, all I had to do was export the document to Rich Text Format and use the import feature in H&M. The software went off and did its thing, returning to me with a nice manual file broken into sections based on the various headings in the document. While there were a few minor layout glitches these were easily solved, and the overall benefit of being able to directly import the manual was a huge timesaver. While it took me 3 shifts (about 4 hours a piece) to import and format the manual manually, with the new version of H&M, I had it all looking and working nicely within a single shift and still had time to edit and modify the document.
The second feature that impressed me greatly was the sheer number of output formats available to the manual writer. The formats include HTML Help, Classic Winhelp, VStudio help, Browser based help (HTML pages), Adobe PDF, MSWord manual and eBook. There s bound to be an option or two that are right for your manual. For us it was perfect. We could create an HTML file for online help, and a downloadable PDF version of the document for offline perusal. Each output style is fully customizable, particularly the document outputs which can be modified with a handy tool called the Print Manual Designer . This comes included with H&M and allows you to design the overall look of your manual in an easy and self-affirming way.
I ve spent a while talking about the input and output options, but not the functionality. I m pleased to say that the interface is straight forward and all the expected options (or at least all the options that I expected) are included. You control the layout in a tree structure on the left hand side of the screen. This determines the numbering of your sections in the final exported manual. Then there are the many standard formatting options like font attributes, tables, character insertion, image insertion etc, but there are also more unique media options. It s possible to embed movie, sound, flash, and other files straight into your manual. This allows you to make a demonstration video illustrating the point the manual is trying to make and include it as part of the documentation. Obviously the viability of this depends upon your chosen output format.
There are a few unique tools that I thought were exceptional concepts. The first is the Syntax Highlighter that allows you to highlight code in your manual to look much the same as code in a development environment. I didn t actually have reason to use it and test it, but I think the idea is a great one.
The second is the Screen Capture tool. This useful little gadget hides the H&M window and allows you to capture an image of any control or window in an open program by simply holding the Ctrl key and then clicking the window. This image is saved into your images folder and inserted into the manual. It s quick and easy to use and saves a lot of time when compared to the alternative method (opening the program, hitting print screen, cropping the image to a desired size, and importing it into the H&M software).
Overall I was very impressed with Help and Manual 4 . Beyond being a basic conversion tool, it makes it very easy to write your entire manual using just the functionality of the software. Once your information is all inputted there are many customization and layout options to get it looking just how you want it. When you re done you can output it to many different formats.
